George A. Knab, 89, of Varysburg passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2019. He was born in Varysburg, NY on December 1, 1929 to the late George and Jeanette (Hewson) Knab, Sr.
George served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Doris Potter and they raised their 4 children in their family home in Varysburg where they have lived for almost 60 years. George spent 25 years with New York State Department of Corrections at Attica, retiring as a Corrections Sergeant. He also worked for 12 years at Moore’s Agway in East Aurora and Marilla, NY.
George was a 25-year member of the Varysburg Fire Department & Rescue Squad, serving as Commissioner for 15 years. He spent 12 years working on the Varysburg Water District and was the Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for 16 years in the Town of Sheldon. He was a member of the American Legion in Strykersville. George and Doris were dedicated Buffalo Bills fans and season ticket holders for 55 years, attending all four of the Bills Super Bowls. In recent years, although George could not attend games, he shared his tickets with his grandchildren. George was also a lifelong Yankee fan and enjoyed attending many games with his grandson, Joe.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Doris (Potter) Knab; his children David (Gail) Knab, Debi (Roger Hogan) Knab, Laurie (Steve) Valenti, and Kimberly Morris. George was a loving, devoted grandfather to Timothy (Natasa, engaged), Meghan (Patrick, engaged) and Lisa Knab, Joseph Valenti and Justin Morris. He is also survived by his brother John (Joan) Knab and sister Ann (Don, deceased) Corwin, both of Varysburg, as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be no prior visitation. A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 11 Washington St, Attica, NY 14011.
