Lifelong Attica resident, Charles Schwalenstocker, passed away on Saturday, June 30th, 2018 at the New York State Veteran’s Home in Batavia, NY. He had attained his goal of reaching 100.
He was born on May 18, 1918 at the family owned Liberty Hotel on Exchange Street in Attica, NY. He graduated from Attica High School in 1936 and from Syracuse University in 1940 with a Business Degree. After college, he began work in Buffalo, NY.
Charles was drafted on the 3rd of April 1942 and was favorably discharged on the 21st of January 1946. After training, he was a medic at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC. He eventually went overseas and proudly fought in WWII in the European Arena. He was proud to be part of the 309th Infantry- Company D- Lightning Division, where he was a Weapon Platoon Runner. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was part of the first group over the Remagen Bridge.
He married Mary Fuest on November 7th, 1942. They eventually settled on Prospect Street where they made a home for their 4 children- Charles (Catherine) Schwalenstocker, Livonia, NY, Mary Ann (Richard) Gilman, Clifton Springs, NY, Patricia Reed, West Henrietta, NY, and John (Susan) Schwalenstocker, Spring Hill, Florida.
After serving as Attica Village Clerk for many years, he operated a home-based income tax business. He had many loyal customers.
Charles was an active member of St. Vincent’s, the VFW, and the American Legion in Attica, NY. He was most proud of being a 70-year member of the Attica Fire Department, where he held many offices.
Family was important to Charles. He was always interested in his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his brother in law, Charles Fuest, North Java, NY and niece, Betty Jane (Ulmer) Sroczyk of Cheektowaga, NY.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary in 2007, two sisters, Marion (Foye) Davidson and Wilma (Harold) Ulmer.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Marley Funeral Home, LLC. 135 Main Street, Attica, New York 14011. An 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at St. Joachim and Anne Church (St. Vincent’s) 50 East Ave Attica, NY. Charles will be laid to rest with full Military Honors at St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Exchange Street, Attica.
